Usman Khawaja hit his seventh Test century since being recalled by Australia to lead a solid effort on day two of the first Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston.

Usman Khawaja's Priceless Century Dominates Day Two Headlines in the First Ashes Test

Khawaja's 137 was the cornerstone of Australia's 343-7 at stumps, with Steve Smith (82) and Travis Head (70) also making half-centuries.

England's bowlers were unable to find a way to break through the Australian top order, with Khawaja and Smith putting on 156 for the second wicket.

Khawaja was particularly impressive, playing some delightful shots all around the ground. He reached his century with a six off Jack Leach, and was eventually dismissed by Chris Woakes.

Smith was also in good touch, hitting 12 fours in his 118-ball knock. He was dropped on 24 by Zak Crawley, but otherwise looked in control.

Head was the other Australian batsman to make a significant contribution, scoring 70 off 93 balls. He hit six fours and a six in his innings.

England's bowlers were once again led by Stuart Broad, who took 3-51. However, they were unable to create enough pressure to take wickets at regular intervals.

The third day of the match is expected to be a crucial one, with England needing to take wickets early to get back into the game.
